DEHOGA Gold Environmental Award
Actively shaping sustainability in Germany: Protecting the environment and the climate is a top priority at AHORN Hotels & Resorts. All seven properties have once again been awarded the DEHOGA Environmental Check in Gold – the highest category for sustainable and environmentally conscious practices in the hotel industry.
In concrete terms, this means that energy and water consumption is at least 30% below the industry average. In the latest, detailed assessment process, all seven hotels were able to confirm their Gold status. The award recognises our long-term investments in energy efficiency, environmental and climate protection, and the responsible use of resources in our holiday regions of the Harz, the Ore Mountains, the Thuringian Forest and the Uckermark.
The DEHOGA Environmental Check assesses hotels across Germany in four key sustainability categories: water consumption, energy consumption, waste generation and responsible food use – important criteria for sustainable hospitality in Germany.

As early as 2009, AHORN Hotels & Resorts launched a comprehensive efficiency strategy aimed at improving sustainability in the hotel industry. This includes, amongst other things, heat recovery from heated air and the switch to modern, energy-saving LED lighting. In addition, all properties generate their own electricity.
Generating their own electricity via natural gas-powered combined heat and power plants also makes efficient use of the heat produced: primary energy savings amount to around 36%, which contributes to lower CO₂ emissions and reduced pollution levels.
Waste prevention and recycling, modern water-saving technologies and a responsible procurement policy – particularly in the food sector – are key pillars of our sustainability strategy at AHORN Hotels & Resorts. We also consistently reduce our use of single-use plastics, such as bottles, cups and stirrers.
In the kitchen, we focus on regional produce, high freshness and short supply chains. In this way, we boost local economic activity and support the infrastructure in our holiday regions – from the Harz Mountains through the Ore Mountains and the Thuringian Forest to the Uckermark.
As part of our sustainability strategy, all AHORN Hotels & Resorts offer charging points for electric cars – ideal for your holiday in Germany. Whilst your vehicle is charging, you can recharge your own batteries in our regions: by enjoying the great outdoors or taking part in our varied range of leisure activities, whatever the weather.
Our partner is ENGIE Deutschland with e-buddie charging points, a leading European provider of charging solutions. The electricity for our charging points comes from the hotels’ own combined heat and power plants.
